Support an Independent Redistricting Commission

Old man putting a puzzle together. Elections should be determined by voters, not by politicians who draw maps.
Time Range For Action Alert:
March 14, 2019 to May 30, 2019

In our current system, politicians draw their own district lines to pick their own voters in order to protect themselves.  That is why we must improve the redistricting process to make it more transparent and accountable.  We need to put an end to hyper-partisan practices that don't benefit constituents.

The League of Women Voters of Texas is proud to support the following legislation that would  create an independent redistricting commission for our U.S. Congressional and State Legislative districts:

  • HB 3421
  • HJR 123 and its enabling legislation HB 3928

These bills would create a commission that would be truly independent of the Legislature, both in terms of membership and operation.  Every step of the process, from the setup of the commission to its operation, has been safeguarded to ensure that the commission is fair, diverse, and transparent.

Urge the House Redistricting Committee to support these bills.
