Time Range For Action Alert:February 21, 2019 to May 30, 2019
Urge your representative and senator to support three Joint Resolutions (SJR 34, HJR 40, HJR 46) which would allow Texans to vote on Medicaid expansion.
- Texas has the highest number of uninsured people in the country, and it is estimated that 1.1 million low-income Texans would be eligible for coverage under a Medicaid expansion.
- Nineteen rural hospitals have closed temporarily or permanently since 2013, in the face of health problems that include the opioid epidemic, maternal mortality, and lack of access to mental health services.
- Four states have expanded Medicaid since 2017 through ballot initiative, but that option is not open to Texans.
- Our option is a constitutional amendment, and three legislators have filed Joint Resolutions to enable that: SJR 34 (Johnson), HJR 40 (Israel), and HJR 46 (Bucy). However, this will require one of these to pass both the House and Senate by a two-thirds vote to be on the ballot in November.
