Time Range For Action Alert:
August 5, 2019 to November 30, 2019

Demand action NOW from Senator Cornyn and Senator Cruz on two gun safety bills!

Two bipartisan gun safety bills passed the US House of Representatives this spring.  They were sent to the US Senate and there has been no action.

  • HR 8 – the Bipartisan Background Checks Act of 2019 passed the House on February 27, 2019, by a vote of 240-190.  The bill had 232 co-sponsors.
  • This bill will require a background check on every gun sale or transfer, with carefully defined exceptions for gifts to family members, hunting, target shooting, and self-defense.
  • Currently only licensed gun dealers are required to conduct background checks.
  • Unlicensed sellers can sell guns at gun shows, online, and person-to-person without conducting any background check.
  • HR 8 would require unlicensed sellers to utilize the same system (NICS) by requiring them to sell or transfer firearms only through licensed dealers.

The second bill, HR 1112, passed the US House of Representatives on Feb. 28, 2019, by a vote of 228-198.

  • This bill will require a 10-day waiting period for a response from the NICS background check system, rather than the current 3-day wait, before a sale can proceed.
  • 93% of Americans, including 87% of gun owners, support requiring background check for every gun sale.
