The House Redistricting Committee plans to start holding public input hearings for the next round of redistricting as early as September, 2019. While their "Tentative Schedule" has not officially been released by the Texas Legislature, it was leaked to the press. We now ask that the House Redistricting Committee to do the right thing and make hearing notices public, so that people have enough time to plan to participate.
We must alert our communities about these hearings, so that our redistricting process is more inclusive and equitable. We therefore also want individual legislators to begin publicizing these hearings. This outreach should include notifying local city and county officials in their area, as well as local press outlets. Announcements should be made in other languages where appropriate. We also ask that constituents check to make sure that their elected officials are promoting these hearings in their areas.
Public comments at the hearings will be used to assist the Legislature when it draws district boundaries. Speaking up about your community is critical to ensuring district lines are drawn to keep your community whole and grouped with nearby communities with similar interests. This ensures that your voice is heard by your elected leaders across all kinds of government decisions.
We must work collectively to assure that our redistricting system does not fall short of what Americans are guaranteed by our Constitution. These simple steps will build public trust and confidence.
