Will Nuclear Waste be Transported through Tarrant County?

News

The Environmental Committee has been busy over this summer dealing with the issue of the transport of highly radioactive material. The US Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) is currently considering licensing two different high-level nuclear waste storage facilities, one in Andrews County, Texas, and another in New Mexico. Under a proposed plan, nuclear waste from eastern power plants may be transported through the DFW area on its way to long-term storage in one of the mentioned facilities.

The Committee has invited Karen Hadden, executive director of the Texas-based Sustainable Energy and Economic Development Coalition, to speak to members on this topic during our September unit meetings. These meetings will be held virtually, over Zoom, on Tuesday, September 22 and Thursday, September 24.

Members are encouraged to attend one (or both!) meetings and should email lwvtarrant [at] gmail.com to request an invitation.
