Regular Monthly Meeting
Our next regular monthly meeting is Sunday, December 2, 2018 at 3:30 pm. The Candidate Forum at Atheneum on Tuesday October 30th will stand in for our regular November meeting. Join us there!
We generally meet the first Sunday of each month at 3:30 pm at the United Community Church at 1325 Main Street in St. Johnsbury. Please stop by and say hello and find out what we've been up to and are planning to be up to!
We've been tabling as the election draws closer: providing information about voting and registering voters. You've seen us at the Dog Mountain Music Series, Lyndonville WM downtown, Autumn on the Green, the Cobleigh Library, Northern Vermont University, and St. J White Market. We've been preparing for the Candidate Forum on Tuesday October 30th.
We have been offering info/registration tables everywhere we can! We will be having an information/registration table at Northern Vermont University's Lyndon campus in front of the Alexander Twilight Theater on Tuesday, 10/30 from 10:30 a.m.-2:30 p.m. Also, we'll have a table at St. Johnsbury's White Market from 11:30-1:30 both tomorrow, 10/26 and the following Friday, 11/3.We had one at the Stars and Stripes Festival in St. J back in mid-September, met lots of people and definitely helped some folks feel that their voices matter and gave them the information they needed about registering and the voting process. We had a number of visitors to our table who felt that they were not allowed to vote since they were felons, but we gladly corrected them of this misapprehension. It was heartwarming to see them understand that they are welcome and included in our democratic process, at least here in Vermont! And, it was great to be able to tell people that the LWVVT is going into prisons to help people register and prepare to vote there-- thank you to David for volunteering to help with that! Instead of our regular October meeting we are did an information/registration table at Danville's Autumn on the Green Festival instead, Sunday October 7 from 10-4.
We will have a table at the various White Market locations in St. J and Lydonville on different days for the rest of October and also at the Cobleigh Library in Lyndonville on Mondays from noon-2 and Wednesdays from 11-1 for the rest of the month. We are possibly going to be at the University of Vermont, Lyndon campus, too, but the details are together yet. Please contact me if you'd like to volunteer at one of these locations.
**We are co-hosting, with the Caledonian-Record, a candidate forum for St. Johnsbury's candidates for State Representative. This will happen on Tuesday, October 30th from 6:30-8:00 p.m. at the St. Johnsbury Athenaeum. WE NEED VOLUNTEERS for this event-- to staff in info table, hand out cards for people to write their questions on, etc. Please sign up!
Our own Lynn Wurzburg and Mary Hauser have been posting on Front Porch Forum about the "job descriptions" of the various offices on the ballot and listing the candidates running for them-- and receiving kudos from the public for doing so! Thank you, Lynn and Mary!!!
Lastly, I interviewed Stacy Jewell, St. Johnsbury Town Clerk, on KATV
to provide answers to the most FAQs about registration and voting. Here is a link to the show, if you want to check it out or share it. The bottom line is that you can find answers to all of your election-related questions by asking your Town Clerk or by checking out the Secretary of State's website Vermont Secretary of State
, especially the My Voter Page feature :: Vermont Election Division ::
We anticipate providing information about voting on high school and college campuses. Let us know if you would like to help.
We have requests from a library and a couple of communities to sponsor educational sessions about voting and/or run candidate forums. Please let us know if you are able to volunteer. Some of the tasks include
- handing out blank paper and pencils and collecting questions from voters.
- reviewing the questions and determining which ones are the same; and prioritizing them
- writing announcements for Front Porch Forum
- posting announcements (that someone else may have written) in your community's FPF
- communicating with candidates to plan forums that include all of a town's candidates for a position
- finding places to hold forums, arranging to get keys, etc.
