The Northeast Kingdom Members-at-Large Unit is actively promoting voter education and voter participation.
Regular Monthly Meeting
We generally meet the first Sunday of the Month at 3:30-5:00 at the United Community Church North in St. J, in the Parlor. In the summer, we tend to table at the Dog Mountain Concerts instead of meeting, and we'll be at the Stars and Stripes Festival in Lyndonville. And meetings may be cancelled if we have been busy with voter registration or candidate forums, so it is wise to email lwvnek [at] yahoo.com to confirm that we are meeting, before you come. Also, we welcome your inquiry about other activities, if you are more interested in action than in meetings and want to be on our email list. : )
For St. Johnsbury residents: the interviews of the three candidates in the one contested race on St. Johnsbury's Town Meeting Day ballot, for two one-year seats on the Selectboard, are now available to view online at http://www.katv.org so please take a look and please let others know they are there to watch.
The LWVNEK had a GREAT meeting in February.
We had a member presentation on Ranked Choice Voting, which could make a very big difference in how our communities in Vermont approach choosing leaders! If you'd like to help out with this project, contact us using the form below.
We were also briefed on the project of making sure polling locations are open 7 a.m.-7 p.m. here in St. Johnsbury and eventually statewide. We have gotten a lot of feedback at our information/registration tables that people find St. J's polling hours of 10-7 problematic, so we're mobilizing! If you'd like to help out with this, please contact us using the form below.
We also briefed on the possibilities of doing information/registration tables at the St. J School and elsewhere to get people involved for Town Meeting Day. Also, the possibility of doing brief interviews on KATV of candidates in St. J's one contested race, for a one-year Select Board seat. If you would like to help with either of these, please contact us using the form below..
Also, a reminder that the LWV New England Leadership Conference looks good again this year and is happening the weekend of April 6-7 in Wells, Maine. The topic is "Advancing Civility in a Diverse New England". The tentative agenda is on our website. The cost of the conference is only $25, which includes lunch on Saturday. So, the only things you pay for are hotel (which is pretty reasonably priced and very cozy and has a YUMMY breakfast) and dinner (which is a really fun opportunity to make new friends; plus, the restaurant choices are exciting, at least to this foodie).
Community Event: NEK Chamber Legislative Breakfast
During Spring 2019, The Northeast Kingdom Chamber sponsors a legislative breakfast at the St. Johnsbury House Dining room from 8am to 9am. Like in January, people will be encouraged this month to write in, e-mail or call in questions they would like to see addressed at the Feb. 25 breakfast, which will be held from 8 to 9 a.m., at the St. Johnsbury House, 1207 Main St., St. Johnsbury. In addition to legislators presenting committee reports, focusing on how their work affects the region, there will be extra time allotted for the submitted questions and queries addressed by the audience.
Individuals wishing to express any comments or region-wide issues may contact McCann at 802-748-3678, director [at] nekchamber.com or drop by chamber office in the Green Mountain Mall, 2000 Memorial Drive, St. Johnsbury Center.
The legislative breakfast series is organized by the Northeast Kingdom Chamber, with sponsorship assistance from Casella Waste Systems, Community National Bank, Fairbanks Scales, Guibord-Pearsons & Sayles Funeral Homes, LaBelle Holdings/Beverly Manufacturing, Lyndon Institute, Myers Containers, Northeastern Vermont Regional Hospital, Passumpsic Savings Bank, St. Johnsbury Academy, Union Bank and Weidmann.
