Nearly all Americans believe women and men should have equal rights, and most believe gender equality is already guaranteed by the U.S. Constitution. It is not!
Sex-based discrimination is still perfectly legal in the U.S.
Activists have been trying to fix this since 1923, when adding an Equal Rights Amendment to the Constitution was first proposed. We finally celebrated success in 2020, when Virginia ratified the ERA and it met all constitutional requirements to become law.
Yet the Equal Rights Amendment remains unpublished, unrecognized, and unenforceable.
So what happened? And what comes next?
