Former Virginia Senator Sonny Stallings will share his perspectives on the pending legislation from the Special Session, now under review by the Virginia State Crime Commission. The VSCC is currently taking public comments and will hold hearings on the 19th and 20th.

During his time in office, Stallings was able to secure passage of a bill requiring criminal background checks on handguns with barrels less than five inches long and so-called paramilitary weapons that fire more than 20 rounds in succession. "That was my biggest accomplishment because it had the most opposition," Stallings said.

The League of Women Voters of South Hampton Roads and New Calvary Baptist Church are hosting a 3rd Party Voter Registration Training July 31, 2019, 6:30pm to 8:00pm, at New Calvary Baptist Church. Light refreshments will be provided. The training will be conducted by Mr. Garry Ellis, Voter Registration Coordinator for the Virginia Department of Elections (VDOE). This training will certify participants to conduct voter registration drives and receive voter registration applications from the VDOE. Participants registering (and attending) on or before July 23, 2019, will receive a Certificate of Completion.

Each class will last 1.5 – 2 hours. Both classes will be held at 2449 Princess Anne Road, Municipal Center Building 14, in the 2nd floor, Conference Room, Virginia Beach, Virginia 23456. If need to renew your certification before the training feel free to do so online. This training is open to the public.

Sharon Shoff, Housing Finance Coordinator with the City of Virginia Beach Department of Housing & Neighborhood Preservation will talk about the factors that affect our region’s housing market.

Shoff is a graduate of James Madison University with a Masters of Urban and Regional Planning from Virginia Tech. For 22 years, she worked for a non-profit in Virginia Beach that provides affordable housing to families, veterans, and persons with disabilities before coming to work at the City of Virginia Beach, where she is focused on facilitating the development of affordable housing in the City. If gentrification, eviction rates, and persistent housing disparities concern you, plan to attend.
