Local News

Breaking news! In 2022, the LWVSHR adopted a Study of Local Journalism and it turns out we were far-sighted because the LWV of Washington state was at work on a similar study. The LWV WA News Position and Study are at https://sites.google.com/a/leagueofwomenvoters.org/clearinghouse/rep/tra...

Sharon Taylor McGlone

The League of Women Voters of South Hampton Roads had the honor to host “The Girls Who Brought the Walls Down….and the Walls that remain” on August 15, 2020. League member, Sharon McGlone, shared her experiences when she and six other African-American girls integrated the Spotsylvania County School district in 1963.

Sharon, married, a mother of four, retired educator and new LWVSHR board member, reflects on her experience 57 years ago as well as the impact on her life. Sharon reflects on this period of her life: “Remembering that period in my life always resurrects feelings of loss, unrealistic expectations and rejection. I remind my nine-year old self that it’s OK to be me. I also accept that I am the change I want to see in this world.”

We are proud to present the video of this presentation.
