Why do I see multiple measures on my ballot asking for an increase in Transient Occupancy Taxes?
Santa Barbara County has a transient occupancy tax or TOT, often referred to as a “hotel tax,” paid by people who stay at hotels, motels and short-term rentals in unincorporated communities within the County. While everyone gets to vote on this regardless of where they live in the county, the County’s TOT is not charged in the cities of Santa Barbara, Santa Maria, Buellton, Solvang, Carpinteria, Lompoc, Goleta or Guadalupe.
There are cities within the county, that also have a measure on the November ballot to raise its TOT, or “hotel tax.” Residents living in these cities will be able to vote on both measures. Please note, proposed TOT city increases impact hotel/lodging guests in that specific city, not the unincorporated county.
