Today, the League of Women Voters of North Santa Barbara County recognizes Women’s Equality Day, commemorating the certification of the 19th Amendment on August 26, 1920, which prohibited denying the right to vote on the basis of sex.

 

This day honors the generations of women who worked, organized, marched, and persevered to expand voting rights. It also reminds us that the work of strengthening our democracy continues.

 

For more than a century, the League of Women Voters has worked to empower voters through nonpartisan voter education, civic engagement, voter registration, and access to reliable election information.

 

On Women’s Equality Day, we celebrate the women who came before us, the women serving and leading our communities today, and the young women who will shape our future.

 

The League of Women Voters does not support or oppose political parties or candidates. We believe democracy is strongest when people are informed, engaged, and able to make their voices heard.
