Martin Luther King Day Celebration Events

1/15: Santa Maria – Lavagnino Plaza, SM Public Library (421 South McClelland St.). Time TBD

1-16: Lompoc: Celebration presented by the MLK Day Celebration Committee: Unity March starting at 9am. Gather at the step of of Grace Temple Missionary Baptist Church, located at 201 S. H St., to participate in the march. Celebration starts approx 11a.m. at DeWees Community Center (1120 Ocean Ave.) Speakers share the message of Martin Luther King Jr. now and into the future. Free and open to the public.

Santa Barbara: MLKSB Committee presents MLK Jr. Celebration at 9am, De La Guerra Plaza (15 E. De La Guerra St.), followed by Unity March up State St. and MLKSB program at The Arlington Theatre (1317 State St.) from 11am-12:pm.

Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, a holiday marking the change-maker's date of birth, was signed into law on Nov. 2, 1983 and first observed on the third Monday of Jan. 1986.

The Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. was a leader in the movement to end racial segregation in the United States and advocated for non-violent protest. He became the youngest man to be awarded the Nobel Peace Prize.
