Meet historian, educator, playwright and author DR. CLAYBORNE CARSON, in conversation with LISA RATNER, attorney and LWVPA president, who will speak to the Voter ID initiative (Prop39) on the upcoming California ballot, and how to host a neighborhood “What’s On Your Ballot” gathering in September. DR. CLAYBORNE CARSON is a founder of Stanford’s MLK Research and Education Institute, where he directed the King Papers Project at Coretta Scott King’s request since 1985. His works include In Struggle and The Autobiography of Martin Luther King, Jr., and he has advised on award-winning documentaries such as Eyes on the Prize.

AFTER SELMA: The march across the Edmund Pettus Bridge on Bloody Sunday galvanized a nation and forced the country to create the 1965 Voting Rights Act. Now, everyone could vote. What has happened since, and what tactics are being used today to suppress voting rights? Civil rights veteran Joanne Blackmon Bland, Emmy-winning filmmaker Loki Mulholland (“The Uncomfortable Truth”) and New York Times bestselling author, Carol Anderson (White Rage: the Unspoken Truth of Our Racial Divide) dive into the history of voter suppression, and the need for us to challenge it, in order to preserve our democracy and equality for all.
