In 2019, the film "Green Book" won the Academy Award for Best Picture. It depicts the journey of a working-class Italian-American bouncer serving as the driver for an African-American classical pianist during a tour through the racially segregated American South in the 1960s. The movie's title alludes to the "Negro Motorist Green Book," a guidebook offering safe travel accommodations for African-Americans during the Jim Crow era.

This New York Times Notable Book is the first to delve into the historical significance and lasting impact of the Green Book.
