Brian Smetkowski will discuss The Art of Civil Conversation at this League of Women Voters of Moscow noon forum.

Now more than ever it is necessary to develop the capacity to address controversial topics with civility; to handle hot topics constructively; and to strive towards understanding – even when agreement is absent. The discussion will explore the causes and consequences of polarization, examine the issues that unite and divide us as citizens, and discuss strategies to engage difficult dialogues with civility.  

Smentkowski is the founding director of the University of Idaho’s Center for Excellence in Teaching and Learning, director of service learning, and associate professor of political science. He has published and presented extensively in each of these fields. His recent scholarship focuses on civility in times of crisis, and the causes and consequences of political polarization.
