Brief description: From political juggernauts to community builders, Idaho women have helped define Idaho’s history. As Idaho and the nation commemorated the passing of the 19th Amendment in 2020, an idea was born to permanently commemorate all Idaho women. The Idaho State Historical Society and Foundation for Idaho History are working with renowned sculptor Irene Deely to create a lasting monument, the Idaho Women’s Suffrage Commemorative Sculpture, which embodies the spirit and legacy of the women’s suffrage movement and universally represents Idaho women through time. Inspired in part by the Idaho State Seal, the only known state seal in America to be designed by a woman, this nameless woman walks metaphorically in the footsteps of those who came before and then hands off her shoe to the future. The sculpture’s placement on the grounds of the State Capitol is a statement of the importance of women to our state.
