Community violence intervention (CVI) refers to a set of community-centered strategies that aim to reduce violence by preventing and disrupting cycles of violence and retaliation and by delivering support and services that save lives, address trauma, provide opportunities and improve the conditions that drive violence. Since 2020, local, state and federal agencies have made unprecedented investments in CVI as a component of a shifting public safety ecosystem, raising questions about how cities should balance CVI work alongside policing and other long-standing public safety institutions.

During the webinar, researchers from the Police Executive Research Forum (PERF) will discuss a forthcoming report outlining how law enforcement can best understand and support the emergence of CVI as part of cities’ public safety ecosystem. This report includes findings from a survey of PERF’s member agencies to assess law enforcement’s understanding of and attitudes toward CVI as an emerging field and recommendations from a roundtable of police and CVI leaders.
