Registration for Black Suffragettes: Then and Now with Audra Wilson

Monday, October 19, 2020 - 7:00pm to Tuesday, October 20, 2020 - 6:45pm

This event is fifth in a series of programs honoring the suffragettes presented by the League of Women Voters of the Palatine Area in collaboration with the Barrington Area Library.

One hundred years ago the 19th Amendment was ratified giving white women the right to vote. Despite the vital contributions of Black women to the suffragette movement, it was not until 1965 that their voting rights were actualized. Today, Black women continue to serve as leaders in the fight for racial justice.

Audra Wilson, a public interest attorney with a depth of experience in poverty law and diversity; former Executive Director of the League of Women Voters Illinois; and current CEO of the Shriver Center on Poverty Law, will highlight Black suffragettes and how their work resonates with current efforts toward racial justice in our country.
