 Brennan Center for Justice

The Brennan Center for Justice is a nonpartisan law and policy institute, which conducts rigorous research to identify problems and provide in-depth empirical findings and compelling analyses of pressing legal and policy issues. The Center also pioneers and champions policy solutions, such as automatic voter registration and small donor public financing.

 National Voter Education Week

National Voter Education Week (NVEW) is an open-source, nonpartisan voter education campaign held annually during the first week of October. NVEW equips voters with the tools and information they need to cast their ballots with confidence, serving as a resource hub for leaders of any community and context who want to help their networks make their voices heard. During this week of interactive education, voters learn to find their polling location, understand their ballot, make a plan to vote in person or by mail, and more.

 ActiVote

ActiVote is committed to engaging more people in the political process by creating an easy and central place for voters to get all the information needed to participate in an upcoming election. ActiVote provides just the facts on candidates and elections, allowing people on their own time to easily access relevant and unbiased information about upcoming elections and candidates.

 Speakers:

 Dr. Maya Kornberg, Research Fellow, Elections and Government Program, Brennan Center for Justice

Dr. Maya Kornberg is a research fellow on the Elections and Government Program, where she leads work related to information and disinformation in politics, Congress, and money in politics. She has worked on democratic governance issues at nonprofits, international organizations, think tanks, and academic institutions. She previously held positions at the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU), the United Nations Development Program (UNDP), NYU Govlab, and Public Agenda. Most recently, she led research for a UNDP and IPU project examining civic engagement in the work of over 80 parliaments around the world. She has taught political science at NYU, Georgetown, and American University. She is also author of the new book Inside Congressional Committees: Function and Dysfunction in the Legislative Process (Columbia University Press, 2023.)

 Eddy Zerbe, Deputy Director, The Students Learn Students Vote (SLSV) Coalition

In his position at SLSV, Eddy directs the work of National Voter Education Week. Prior to joining the SLSV Coalition, Eddy Zerbe was active in non-partisan civic engagement organizations from the local to the national level. Most recently, Eddy was the Director of RISE to Vote, a program that partners with college and professional sports teams, leagues, and athletes to improve civic engagement in our country. Eddy has also worked for the Funders’ Committee for Civic Participation and Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights. In Texas, he was a co-founder of MOVE Texas and worked in the office of State Representative Ruth Jones McClendon. He graduated from the University of Texas at San Antonio.

 Sara Gifford, COO and Co-Founder, ActiVote

Sara is a co-Founder of ActiVote. After a successful career in tech, she founded ActiVote with two of her ex-colleagues with the goal to use their skills to advance civics, and to empower voters to be informed and confident to vote in EVERY election. They focus on creative and engaging ways to put voters at the center of the process and to create a civic habit.
