We support measures to further good government through the support of non-partisanship in local government and the support of legislation which permits increased flexibility in California State law governing general law counties.

News

Traffic stops—some 20 million annually—are the most common interaction Americans have with police. As in other aspects of American life, one’s race plays a role in who gets stopped most frequently, why, and what happens thereafter.

Position

Stipulated dismissal, presented for Court approval, guarantees Census Bureau will not release rushed apportionment numbers, will not provide states with data to exclude noncitizens from redistricting, and will continue to provide key analysis and information to plaintiffs and the public about the quality of the partially shortened count under the Trump administration.

The Weston League of Women Voters will hold a virtual town hall, “Speak Up!,” on Saturday, February 13 from 10:30 a.m. to noon. Residents will have an opportunity to ask local officials about government issues and community affairs impacting Weston today.

LWV on Redistricting

Congressional districts and government legislative bodies should be apportioned substantially on population. We oppose partisan and racial gerrymandering that strips rights away from voters.

The process called “redistricting” will determine how our local school board, city council, state legislative, and congressional districts are drawn. How can our communities participate? How can we ensure that our interests are being heard and represented by our elected officials? How can we ensure that the voting strength of our communities is not weakened? What are the important factors to consider in redistricting?
