Moms Demand Action Alachua County and BeSmart hosted a panel discussion focusing on the importance of secure gun storage. LWVAC's VP and Gun Violence Prevention and Safety Chair, Gwendolyn Saffo was one of seven panelists. In addition to advocating for laws that require secure storage of firearms in homes and vehicles, Moms Demand Action uses the Be SMART framework to have conversations with parents and caregivers about keeping children from accessing loaded firearms. The goal of this event was to discuss the strategies each group is using to promote secure gun storage and explore ways these organizations can increase our reach and effectiveness, both individually and in collaborative initiatives.

The Florida Senate will hear Senate Joint Resolution 1114 tomorrow (Feb. 28, 2024). Senate Joint Resolution 1114 (SJR 1114) proposes the repeal of a constitutional provision requiring public campaign financing for statewide candidates who adhere to spending limits. We're urging Florida League members to contact their Senator and ask them to vote NO on SJR 1114.

Gainesville and Alachua County are in an "unprecedented" time of gun violence against its youngest community members, City Commissioner Desmon Duncan-Walker told a LWVAC committee last month.

Duncan-Walker, who says the issue often makes her lose sleep, urged members of the League's Gun Violence Prevention Committee to get involved with a community-wide task force that will attempt to tackle the problem at its roots.

A recording of the meeting is now available. Want to get involved with the League's efforts? Contact committee chair Gwendolyn Saffo.
