Check out Erica Smitka, LWVNY's Executive Director, speaking on LookTV on Prop 1, NY's ERA
Erica did an exceptional job dispelling the untruths and clarifying what Prop 1 covers. I encourage you to paste this all over your social media platforms. Thanks. https://lookmediaresource.org/look-this-week-10-14-24-erica-smitka/
The LWV of the Cooperstown Area submitted the following letter to the Editor of the Daily Star regarding Prop 1.
To the Editor:
Be a Voter, Turn the Ballot Over: Vote Yes on Prop 1
When you go to the polls this November, be sure to turn your ballot over and vote “yes” on Prop 1.Currently, New York State’s constitution does not protect all New Yorkers. The current clause in the State Constitution prohibits discrimination by state and local governments based on race, color, creed, or religion.
Proposition 1, also known as New York’s Equal Rights Amendment, will expand the Equal Rights clause to prohibit discrimination by state and local governments based on disability, age, national origin, and sex including sexual orientation, gender identity, and reproductive choice.
This amendment passed the New York State legislature in both 2022 and 2023, which is why it is now a ballot measure in 2024.
If passed, Prop 1 will have the following impacts:
-Cements the right to abortion in our state constitution
-Makes sure the government cannot discriminate against older New Yorkers, pregnant New Yorkers, LGBTQ New Yorkers, or New Yorkers with disabilities when it comes to hiring, promotions, and pay
-Ensures older New Yorkers and those with disabilities have the access they need to vote
-Protect access to reproductive healthcare, including abortion, birth control and IVF
Prop 1 does NOT eliminate anyone’s rights. It does NOT change any laws. What Prop 1 will do is protect all New Yorkers from discrimination giving all of us freedom to control our own lives, futures, and healthcare decisions.
Remember to turn the ballot over on November 5th and Vote “yes” on Prop 1.
