To celebrate America’s 250th anniversary, the Village Library of Cooperstown, the League of Women Voters of the Cooperstown Area, and the NAACP of Oneonta will host a reading and discussion of The Greatest Sentence Ever Written, Walter Isaacson’s best-selling and engaging analysis of one of history’s most powerful sentences: “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty, and the pursuit of Happiness. ”Isaac's work explores, word by word, the iterations before the sentence was finalized and describes the history behind the language and philosophies that guided our Founding Fathers. Following the reading, Hartwick College Professor Zachary McKenney will lead a discussion on the Declaration of Independence, both in its time and in the present.
