Finding Common Ground - A Series of Community Conversations

The League of Women Voters of White Plains in collaboration with the White Plains Public Library invites the residents of White Plains to come together in a series of community conversations called Common Ground.

For our participatory democracy to flourish and to make possible collective action, social solidarity is necessary.  We believe that through in-person dialogue and reflection we can reach across what divides us to create Common Ground.

People of all viewpoints are encouraged to participate, and we are committed to creating an atmosphere that is safe and welcoming for all; a place to share experiences, opinions, and solutions.  The focus will be on seeing how people in our area are actually affected by the policies, issues, and events we hear about.

We will use the World Café model to structure our conversation. Participants will be split up into small groups and paired with a table captain, who will help keep the discussion on track. We will mix the groups up a few times during each event, to maximize the number of people who interact with each other.

Meetings are the third Thursday of every month, 6:00 PM – 8:00 PM in the Community Room at the White Plains Public Library.

The inaugural season has 9 topics.

  • September 20 – Immigration
  • October 18 – Civic Engagement and Voting
  • November 15 – Transgender Rights
  • December 20 – Insiders and Outsiders
  • January 17 – Race
  • February 21 – Economic Inequality
  • March 21 – Sexual Harassment and Gender Equity
  • April 18 – Environmental issues and Food Justice
  • May 16 – Healthcare
