60th Anniversary of the Voting Rights Act

(The following was copied from LWVUS's 08/06/25 Action Alert.)

Sixty years ago, Lyndon B. Johnson signed the Voting Rights Act (VRA) into law, outlawing discriminatory barriers that prevented voters of color from exercising their right to vote.

In the decades since it was passed into law, the VRA has been reauthorized every time with bipartisan support and signed by presidents of both political parties. The VRA remains necessary to this day to prevent voter discrimination for all of us, no matter the language we speak, the color of our skin, or the zip code we live in.

The Senate just reintroduced the John R. Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act (JLVRAA), which will fully modernize and restore the VRA to protect voters against discrimination.

Tell your Representatives and Senators to support the John R. Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act and live up to the full promise of American democracy.

The decision to maintain the governor’s veto or override it now goes to the Ohio Senate.

(The following was copied from LWVO's Action Alert.)

This week [week of 07/21/25] , you helped us stop the Ohio House from overriding two of the vetoes Governor DeWine issued before signing Ohio’s 2026-27 main operating budget. Both provisions would have taken funding from schools and other vital public services, hurting communities across Ohio.

Unfortunately, House members were successful in passing—by just one vote—an override to the governor’s veto of a provision that takes away local authority to decide what kind of property tax levies work best in their communities.

The decision to maintain the governor’s veto or override it, now goes to the Ohio Senate. It's up to us: we must stop this override.
