NewsToday, the U.S. House of Representatives has taken a dangerous step backward, passing legislation to block millions of American citizens – including tens of thousands here in Michigan – from making their voices heard in the voting booth.
This country has moved beyond the dark days of poll taxes, “literacy tests,” and other shameful barriers designed to deny citizens the right to vote. The burdensome, unnecessary requirements in the SAVE Act will have the same effect. This failed policy will take us back to a government where thousands of eligible voters will be turned away at the polls and where citizenship can be determined by the whims of politicians.
I urge every senator to oppose this bill and stop this assault on our voting rights. Instead, focus on supporting election officials as we tackle the real threats to our security: foreign interference, weaponized disinformation, and the current administration’s severe cuts in cybersecurity support to states.
I will continue to fight this and every effort to block the votes and the voices of U.S. citizens.
