Streetsboro Board of Education Regular Meeting

Date of Meeting: 7/10/2025

Format: In-person

Meeting Summary:

The Regular Meeting of the Streetsboro Board of Education was called to order on July 10, 2025, at 5:45 PM.

PUBLIC COMMENTS: There were no public comments.

The Minutes from the 06/16/2025 Regular Meeting and 6/26/2025 Fiscal Meeting were approved.

SUPERINTENDENT’S REPORT: The board will soon be asked to vote on a revised Cell Phone policy. The district currently has a cell phone policy in place that restricts cell phone use during instructional periods. The cell phone policy is being looked at and updated to ensure compliance with Governor DeWine’s mandate that cell phones cannot be used during school time. The district is seeking clarification on what “school time” means. Does that include the open and close of the school day, or does that also include bus time, or other times that students are on school property?

The school calendar is being revised. The change will not affect school families. The change will impact professional development and collaboration days. Staff will still have the same number of professional development and collaboration days, but the days will be split between professional development and collaboration time, rather than being held separately. There will be a half-day of professional development and a half-day of collaboration, instead of holding them separately. It will spread out professional development and collaboration time. The revised calendar will be ready for board approval in August.

TREASURER’S REPORT:. The district ended the year with a million dollars less than the previous year. There is a resolution to proceed with a new levy to be placed on the ballot this coming November. It is recommended that the district join the group Vouchers Hurt Ohio. There is a cost to be a member, but it supports a lawsuit against legislation that cuts public school funding in support of a Voucher system.

Governor DeWine vetoed several items on HB96 that are negative to public schools. Of importance to schools are items 55, 65, and 66. Item 55 alters the state's method of reimbursing local governments for property tax rollbacks. The aim is to reduce voter-approved levies. Item 65 addressed the 20 mil floor calculation used to guarantee a minimum level of funding for public schools. It has been estimated that if this line item is approved, as many as one-third of public schools in Ohio could go into a fiscal emergency. Item 66 puts restrictions on School District property tax levies. These line items would not immediately have an impact on the Streetsboro district. They are all negative to Public Schools. The Ohio legislature is trying to override Governor DeWine’s veto. It is important to contact your representative to express disagreement with Items 55, 65, and 66.

Finally, membership in Vouchers Hurt Ohio is important. In 2024, there were 103 participants in Ed Choice Expansion. Many Streetsboro students went to private schools. The number is increasing. There are problems with the Voucher system. There are no checks on who receives the vouchers. The original intent was to give low-income students support to leave a failing school district for a better opportunity. Without any safeguards, wealthy parents use the Voucher system to get tuition reimbursement for private schools. This takes money from public schools.

CHIEF BUSINESS OFFICER REPORT: A water treatment contract needs approval. Fleetwood Gold wants to come back. It will be a part of the Community Concert Series. Agreements will be made with groups performing as part of the Series. Musicians wanting to perform at the school who are not part of the series will only be signing a rental agreement, with no other school support.

BOARD REPORTS: The Education Foundation is looking into ways to modify the application process to diversify applicants. Board Members reiterated the importance of talking to your representatives about school funding issues.
