A Deeper Understanding, Part 2

 

The public was invited by the League of Women Voters of Coos County to attend the 2nd  informational presentation titled the Pacific Coast Intermodal Port Project – A  Deeper Understanding:  Part 2 at the Egyptian Theater on November 19th. 

 

This educational program focused on the status and perspectives of the global container shipping industry and intermodal transport systems in North America. The program included panel members with decades of experience in the container shipping industry, supply chain economics, and railroad engineering and operations.  A recording of this presentation along with biographical info on each speaker is available in 3 parts on the following YouTube links. 

 

Section 1:  Introduction & International Supply Chains:  A Primer on How they Work

An illustrated presentation of global supply chains and how they work by Steve Hughes, supply chain expert.  Hughes is the president and CEO of HCS International, a consulting firm that focuses on the international supply chain to the automotive industry.  Through his company, HCS International, Steve represents the Gemini Shippers Association, a non-profit buying group for ocean container freight whose combined membership volume makes it the 8th largest importer in North America.

Section 2:  The Land Based Components of the Global Supply Chain

An illustrated presentation of global suppy chains and the land-based distribution systems across North America by Bill Burgel.  Burgel has over five decades of experience in the railroad industry as an employee and consultant.  He holds degrees in engineering and a masters in structural geology and has worked in railroad engineering & operations, including serving as Chief Train Dispatcher for Union Pacific.  Bill has worked for various rail companies, the US Surface Transportation Board, several DOT's and transit agencies and several consulting companies.

Section 3:  Panel Discussion of Questions from the Audience with Steve Hughes, Bill Burgel, & Bob Morrow

This segment contains the recording of the audience question and answer session of the panelists.  Panel Members Steve Hughes, presenter in Segment 1, and Bill Burgel, presenter in Segment 2, are joined by Bob Morrow.  Morrow holds an MBA and is a certified Project Management Professional.  He has extensive experience in strategic business development and operational project management for various industries.  He has served as a consultant in stevedore operations and marine terminals technology for multiple international ports and terminal operators based in Asia and North America.  The panel moderator is Alice Carlson.  Questions from the audience that were not answered were given to the Coos Bay International Port.

Since 1962 the LWVCC has conducted comprehensive studies of the Port of Coos Bay, updating them on approximately 20-year intervals. The most recent study was  completed in 2023 and can be found here: Oregon International Port of Coos Bay study
