Meeting Observed: Kent City Council

Date of Meeting: 6/17/2026

Format: In-person

Meeting Summary:

Most of today's actions were handled on the consent agenda. This is when issues are discussed at length at the Council “committee” meeting, usually two weeks before. If there are no changes to the proposal and Council members agree they have had a complete picture, the item is voted upon without further information. Any issue can be taken off the “consent” agenda.

Approved for continued action:
— An agreement to split costs of upkeep on the College Town parking lot
— Agreed to ask voters for approval to continue the .25 percent income tax charge that was started to pay for the police station and will be paid off early at the end of 2026.

In light of that, the city would like to continue the tax to hire 3 fire staff, 3 service workers, and 3 police officers due to the overtime being accrued. And there are pending needs within the city's infrastructure that must be addressed. The.25 tax would be a continuation, not an increase.

In other business on the consent agenda, officials agreed to change some of the rules of procedure for the Sustainability Commission. Later, Council was asked by Council member Traci Wallach to start a Council Sustainability committee within Council - agreed.

— Agreed to update an agreement with Pingree 2000 Real Estate Holdings. LLC concerning the new Enterprise building at the north end of the auto row on SR 59.

— Agreed to change restrictions on residential homes seeking more or different parking.

— Agreed to a permit to allow a road closure on East Erie Street for the August 21 KSU Freshman Expo being held downtown.
