Town of Middlefield and League of Women Voters to Hold Meeting on Ballot Question on Highway Superintendent Position

 In the November election, residents of the Town of Middlefield will vote on a proposal to change the position of Town Highway Superintendent from an elected to an appointed position. The Town held two public hearings in the spring on the question, and the Town Board voted unanimously to approve the change. To become law, however, the citizens of Middlefield must vote to approve the change.

 The League of Women Voters of the Cooperstown area and the Town of Middlefield will hold an informational meeting on the ballot question on Sunday, October 18, from 3-4:30 p.m., at the Middlefield Town Hall (3717 County Highway 35). Town Supervisor Ron Morgan and Town Council Members Jeff Woeppel and Kelly Branigan will discuss the pros and cons of the proposal and address any questions. League member Doreen Del Rosario will serve as moderator for the event.

 “Town roads are a substantial part of the budget in rural communities, so any issue related to those expenses deserves careful consideration, notes League Voter Service chair Maureen Murray. “We commend the Town for making the effort to share this important information with their town, so citizens can make an informed choice.

 The event is open to the public; all Middlefield residents are encouraged to attend. Light  refreshments will be served. A copy of the proposed Local Law is available at the Middlefield Town Office and on the Town website (www.middlefieldny.org).
