Immigration is stitched into the very fabric of this country, with most of us being immigrants who live alongside and with the land’s Tribal Nations. But the alarming xenophobia being carried out in our names, including neighbors and friends deported without due process or accountability, goes against that fact and against the social, cultural, and economic benefit of the United States. Immigration is not the enemy, but that idea can be difficult to convey to those who can’t imagine an effective, compassionate system.
LWV's Position on Immigration
Statement of Position on Protecting the Rights of Immigrants as adopted by concurrence by
delegates to Convention in June 2026:
“The League of Women Voters believes that all residents, regardless of immigration status or citizenship, should be treated with dignity and respect. This means that residents, regardless of immigration status or citizenship, should have access to essential state-funded services, have the opportunity to avail themselves of legal representation in court and immigration proceedings, and have the opportunity to live and work in safety. The League encourages all elected officials and government leaders to take action to ensure these fundamental rights. It also means that political leaders have an obligation to condemn xenophobia, discrimination, and anti-immigrant rhetoric.”
