FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Protecting Minor Children: Local Organizations Share Family Preparedness Resources at Mexican Consulate Fair
League of Women Voters of North Santa Barbara County and Santa Barbara County Commission for Women connect families with child safety information and community services
SANTA MARIA, Calif. — The League of Women Voters of North Santa Barbara County and the Santa Barbara County Commission for Women participated in the final Mobile Mexican Consulate resource fair of 2026, held October 24–25.
Both organizations joined community partners to help families find information about protecting minor children, preparing for unexpected circumstances, and accessing essential services.
The Commission for Women, with Chair Vasquez, shared information about child safety and family preparedness. Topics included identifying a trusted adult who could pick up and care for children if a parent were detained by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) or temporarily unable to care for them. The outreach encouraged parents and guardians to consider emergency contacts, school pickup arrangements, and how a trusted caregiver would access important information about their children’s needs. Families with questions about legal documents or their individual circumstances should consult a
qualified legal services provider.
Eva Avila and Rosa Coronado, chairs of the League’s Immigration committee, supported the League’s outreach to connect families with reliable information and community resources. The League shared information about immigration safety, health care, food assistance, and citizenship preparation classes, including how to access programs and obtain enrollment assistance.
Together, the organizations emphasized the value of advance planning and access to reliable information. Knowing whom to contact and where to turn can help families respond to unexpected situations and support children’s safety and well-being.
The League of Women Voters of North Santa Barbara County and the Santa Barbara County Commission for Women thank the Mexican Consulate, resource fair coordinators, and participating community organizations for connecting families with valuable resources throughout the year.
The League’s participation reflects its nonpartisan commitment to community education and informed civic participation.
