Committee Meetings

  • Because of a large number of absentees and the impending storm, lots of things were delayed, including all Committee of the Whole matters (applicant for committee appointment and Preparation for Consideration of NAACP New Committee Request to Address Race and Diversity in Kent)

Finance Committee:

  • 2022 Budget Appropriations Amendment e.g. Body Cameras -- passed.

Community Development:

  • A very long report on all the new businesses moving into and expanding in Kent. A couple of things worth noting: Medical Marijuana dispensary -- only three licenses will be issued and the proposed Kent dispensaries are down the lottery list. The highest is Lightly Toasted which is no. 6, but only 3 will be approved by the state. Kent is being impacted by the same three factors that are negatively impacting businesses (esp. small businesses) across the country: Supply Chain problems, labor shortages, and public reluctance to go out. Issue of Federal law on taxes where you work rather than where the business is located may pose a problem. Kent has 2.9% unemployment rate.
  • Haymaker Farmers Market Lease Renewal -- nothing changed -- approved unanimously.
  • ODOD Demolition Grant -- Two blighted properties eligible for a grant to demolition -- approved intent to apply for grant.

Streets, Sidewalks & Utilities:

  • Main Street Project -- got another $700,000 grant.
  • Impending storm -- everyone was eager to get home.
