Meeting Summary:

Board President Tracy Campbell opened the 5:45 PM meeting by expressing gratitude to the Streetsboro Community for passing the November 7, 2023 ballot levy.

The meeting began with a roll call and recitation of The Pledge of Allegiance.

PUBLIC COMMENTS: A student expressed support for a non-restrictive bathroom policy that would allow transgender students to use the bathroom of the gender with which they identify.

The board approved the meeting minutes from 10/12/2023 and 11/01/2023 as submitted.

SUPERINTENDENT’S REPORT: Superintendent Michael Daulbaugh reported on the success of a full-scale, county-wide active shooter drill. The drill was held at the Middle School on October 27, 2023. It involved selecting Streetsboro school staff, Portage County EMA, Streetsboro Police and Fire Departments, University Hospitals, BCI, FBI, and other agencies. Every level of the system was tested.

There was 95% staff participation in a recent Professional Development Day. Staff learned about self-care, the importance of self-care, the impact of self-care in the classroom, and creating resiliency in students.

The school system has purchased and uses the CKLA (Core Knowledge Language Arts) curriculum. The program is scripted from day 1 to day 184. Teachers know what to teach and know where they need to be. Feedback from teachers regarding the CKLA program has been positive.

TREASURER’S REPORT: Treasurer Brian Haines thanked the Streetsboro Community for passing the levy. Class 2022 and 2023 funds are being closed out. November General Fund Review. The November 2023 five-year forecast was presented. Areas for concern are the rapidly escalating costs associated with wages and benefits. Health insurance is especially worrisome, and the current rate of increase in these costs is not sustainable. More people are seeking medical care, and these increases are happening across the United States. Wages and Benefits currently consume 84% of the system budget.

CHIEF BUSINESS OFFICER’S REPORT: Mr. CJ Scarpino congratulated the newly elected board members. Installation of a digital sign on the Streetsboro campus is moving forward. The electrical requirements for the sign are currently being tested. The Streetsboro Jr. Rockets wish to enter a facility rental agreement for an end-of-year award ceremony.
