Streetsboro Board of Education Regular Meeting
Date: 4/9/2026
Format: In-person
Summary:
The Regular Meeting of the Streetsboro Board of Education was called to order on April 9, 2026 at 5:45 PM.
PUBLIC COMMENTS: A concerned parent stepped forward to encourage Streetsboro voters to pass the school levy on the May ballot. The parent has children involved in band, athletics and clubs. She spoke on how she has watched her children grow as people because of these activities. Athletics has taught them to handle disappointment and how to be a member of a team. Clubs allowed them to grow confidence as they were able to find others that shared their interests. Kudos were given to the teachers. People have commented that teachers make too much money, of which she could not disagree with more. How could anyone put a price on what teachers do to help the students. Paying more in taxes is not easy, but we stand to lose a great deal if the kids and schools are not supported. Please support the levy.
The Minutes from the 03/12/2026 Regular Meeting were approved.
SUPERINTENDENT’S REPORT: Two staff members presented an overview of happenings around Streetsboro Elementary. They highlighted the achievements at the building this school year. The school was awarded the Governor’s Science of Reading Award for 2026. Students continue to see academic growth through intervention, assessment and support. There is a lot involved in helping students grow academically. The PAX program has been a success. This program teaches students how to act and how to be good citizens and good friends. A PAX Leader award has been added to highlight the achievement of student leaders. The PAX program teaches behaviors that lead to success. The yearly read-along turns pages into purpose and supports the library one story at a time. The Bubble Run was a success. It has become a huge fundraiser. This year the funds from the run were used to put up a structure on the playground to protect students from the sun. Thanks to the help of high school students, the swimming program has helped some of the neediest students grow. The school received a GPD Grant for $6,000. It will be used to creatively fund more playground equipment. Not all students can climb or use the existing equipment. To make the recess equipment more accessible, the school will purchase outdoor instruments that work like wind chimes. They can be played with or without climbing. Still to come are Literacy Under the Lights and SES Rockets Read Together. The Courtyard is also being transformed into a certified butterfly garden with some of the money received from the Bubble Run.
The Middle School won the Momentum Award from Ohio for the second straight year. This does not come without a lot of work and effort. There will be a BOGO Scholastic Book Fair held at the school. Families will be able to purchase a book and receive one free. The school will not receive any money from this sale; it is a treat for the students and parents and will be held as part of the Literacy Under the Lights program.
This is testing time for grades 3-12. Students will be busy with testing the next few weeks.
Paperwork is being gathered to contract with Right at School. Parents will be educated on the services to be provided. The Spring Mission Monitor is going out to community centers and into mailboxes soon. There are several school promo videos going out. The district is trying different media to get the messaging out on what is happening.
TREASURER’S REPORT: Revenues were 649,976 and expenses were 667,999. In the next few months there will be a net decrease as most of the money has already come in. SPARC contract is up for renewal. Requesting a yearly transfer of $280,000 to cover costs associated with classroom maintenance. There are several bills in the Ohio State legislature that will have an impact on public schools. SB19 passed the senate and is now in the house. It requires more intervention services and eliminates the current law regarding advanced math courses. The school will have to adopt a new comprehensive math placement policy.
Treasurer Brian Haines also presented the Taxpayer Trilogy: HB240; HB421 and HB422.
HB420 terminates voter approved property tax levies authorized for continuing over a period of time. It prohibits continuing levies after tax year 2029. It will place restrictions on future levies. The end result will make it difficult for long-term financial stability and will make schools have to keep going back to the voters to ask for more.
HB421 reduces inside millage. Allow a voter initiative to reduce the rate of inside millage.
HB422 increases the voter threshold needed for property tax increases.
These have not passed and are currently moving through the legislative system.
Other legislation of interest is HB175 on scholarships and nonpublic school reporting. It will impose additional reporting requirements on private funding and number of scholarship students. HB575: This is a pilot program for subdivision consolidation. Ohio has decreased the number of its school districts over time. The smaller districts cover larger geographical areas with fewer students. These small districts are burdened with higher transportation costs.
CHIEF BUSINESS OFFICER REPORT: Starting to get a lot of inquiries about rental agreements for the coming year. We are currently waiting on the school year calendars from all of the buildings to be finalized before setting up the agreements, to avoid scheduling conflicts. The PTA’s magic show event was very successful. The district is entering an agreement with Streetsboro Parks and Rec. They help to maintain the school fields. The district is in an Ohio School consortium to select bids for electrical services. We purchase large amounts of energy through a consortium as a cost savings measure. Lemonade Day is coming up.
