Streetsboro Board of Education Regular Meeting

Date of Meeting: 5/8/2025

Format: In-person

Meeting Summary:

The Regular Meeting of the Streetsboro Board of Education was called to order on May 8, 2025, at 5:45 PM.

PUBLIC COMMENTS: There were no public comments.

The Minutes from the 04/17/2025 Regular Meeting were approved.

SUPERINTENDENT’S REPORT: A faculty member presented what students are doing for the Rockets Read Together project. This project was funded by a $7575 grant from the GPD Group. Students read "Here’s Hank" by Henry Winkler as part of the project. It is a part of a series of books that feature Hank, a student with dyslexia who struggles with math and reading. Students read the book together and have activities that are coordinated with what the character in the book is doing. These first reader chapter books are about fun and resilience.

Mr. Tevepaugh introduced Streetsboro’s Athletes of the Year.
A Wall of Fame presentation was given. This is a way to highlight students who excel in sports, but not to the level of reaching the Hall of Fame. An interactive digital board is being designed and populated to feature past and current athletes and will include a history of the school’s Championships. Staff hope to have the Wall of Fame implemented by Fall 2025.
The superintendent congratulated Treasurer Brian Haines on the school district receiving an Auditor of State Award with Distinction for its audit reports.

TREASURER’S REPORT: Brian Haines presented the five-year plan to the board. The state requires five-year projections. Revenues are declining or stagnant, and expenses are climbing. The expenses with the greatest rate of increase are health insurance and special education. At current rates, the school is projected to be in a Fiscal Deficit by 2028.
STRS recently changed the years of service needed for full retirement to 32. As a result of the change, the district reopened the early buy-out incentive plan. Four additional staff members took the early buyout. HB96 passed in the House and is currently going to the Senate. The bill will eliminate the Fair School Funding Plan and limit cash carry forward to 30%.

The recent school levy failed. The tally was 69.5% NO and 30.5% YES. Further discussions are needed on next steps and the path forward.

CHIEF BUSINESS OFFICER REPORT: The business office has secured graduation sponsors, so the entire graduation and the events surrounding it will be paid for. Covered events include the Senior Breakfast, Senior Lunch, and fireworks.

Food Service nutritional standards were submitted for board approval. This must be done annually.

BOARD REPORTS: Ohio State testing is nearly complete. At the time of this report, only make-up testing is being done. There is a nationwide initiative to start Girls Flag Football, which the Streetsboro School District will participate in. Band camp dates are set for July 28 to August 1.
