Streetsboro Board of Education Meeting

Meeting Summary:

The Regular Meeting of the Streetsboro Board of Education was called to order on June 13, 2024, at 5:45 PM.

President Kristin Bedford opened the meeting with a Roll Call and the Pledge of Allegiance.

PUBLIC COMMENTS: There were no public comments.

The Regular Meeting Minutes from 5/06/2024 were approved.

SUPERINTENDENT’S REPORT: Athletic Administrator Mr. Randy Tevepaugh presented the first annual Athletic Report to the board. The report covers every student from grades 7-12 who participated in athletics in the past year. It also speaks to past accomplishments over the past year and outlines future goals and expectations. The report will serve as a template for future annual reports. Awards were presented to the Male and Female Student-Athletes of the Year. Members of the track team and their coaches who represented Streetsboro schools at the recent State Championships were introduced to the Board.

TREASURER’S REPORT: Treasure Brian Haines gave a quick general fund review. The only revenue for the past month came from foundation payments. Wages continue to be the largest expense. There are two resolutions on the Board Agenda for two renewal levies, a 3.5 Mil and a 3.9 Mil, for the November ballot.

CHIEF BUSINESS OFFICER REPORT: CJ Scarpino, the Chief Business Officer, cited the fact that rental agreements do generate revenue for the school district. He presented an idea to the Board for the district to use the school auditorium to host a Community Concert Series. The series will generate revenue for the schools, create fundraising opportunities for school groups through concession sales, engage the community, and bring awareness of the district to people who do not have children enrolled, and provide learning opportunities for students in musical arts and stage production. The plan is to have a slow roll-out during the 2024-2025 academic year, with three acts: a December TSO tribute, a February Fleetwood Mac tribute, and an April Beatles tribute. All three acts are willing to participate for a share of ticket sale revenues only, and therefore, this initial test run of three acts will not create a financial risk. A Community Concert series at the school will be new to this area. Other schools do this, including Canton City Schools and Michigan schools. The Board indicated that they like the idea and are positive about moving forward with the proposal.
Nutrition Group was invited to present what has been done to improve the school lunch program. A La Carte sales have jumped, as students prefer the A La Carte options over purchasing the full lunch. Food costs and labor costs are rising. Last year, the district lunch program lost approximately $188,000. Mr Dahlbaugh interjected that the goal of a school lunch program is to break even or run at minimal loss. The goal is not to make money but to provide food at reasonable costs to students. As a result of the losses and rising costs, the board approved a 25-cent increase in school lunch prices for the 2024-2025 Academic Year.

BOARD REPORTS: The Music Boosters will hold car washes as a fundraiser during the summer months. New officers have been installed in the PTA. Students were given a grant to attend a yearbook convention. The board is looking into how scholarships are given and is considering better ways to spend the money and diversify.
