Join us as we celebrate Election Hero Day with a screening of “The Officials,” an insightful and timely short movie about the election officials and volunteers who work to ensure a safe and secure voting experience for all Americans, on Tuesday, Oct. 29, at the Kent Free Library (second-floor large meeting room), 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. Time will be allotted for discussion after the movie. The screening is free and open to the public.

The screening of “The Officials” is in recognition of Election Hero Day, a nonpartisan, national celebration that was founded in 2020 to honor those who play a role in preserving our democracy. For 2026, the actual celebration date is Oct. 20. The national League of Women Voters became a managing partner of Election Hero Day in 2025.

“The League has the power to mobilize our members and communities to celebrate and thank our election officials and poll workers. Doing so will help sustain our neighbors and friends who serve as poll workers and inspire our communities to participate in the hard work that is required to maintain a healthy democracy,” the national League said in a statement.

In a synopsis of the film, the creators note that the work of elections officials in the United States has “fundamentally changed” since the 2020 election. The work went from being “a significant but quiet civil service job” to one in which election workers are faced with endless harassment, accusations of wrong-doing, constant questioning of their integrity, and coordinated strategies designed to deter and distract them from their most important work. . . . The film “tracks the transformation of this small group of politically diverse government workers to champions of unbiased, nonpartisan civil service and warriors for free and fair elections.”
