Democracy is not just a system of government—it’s the power of the people. It begins with us, our voices and our votes. At a time when democracy is under threat, we ask you to come together to defend it.
Tomorrow, as the President addresses Congress, the League of Women Voters and We The People are asking family, neighbors and friends to join millions of others across the United States in an act of solidarity.
Instead of tuning in, members and friends are being asked to:
- Put a candle in your window as a show of solidarity, shining a "Light4Democracy" during the time of the speech, 9-10:30 PM. This small, yet significant, gesture serves as a reminder that democracy thrives when citizens remain engaged and vigilant.
- Take a photo of the candle and post it on social media during the speech with #light4democracy.
- Use the time to contact your members of Congress—by phone or in writing—urging them to continue protecting our democracy. You could even send them your candle picture as a symbol of your commitment.
- Invite friends, family and other democracy groups to participate in this simple, yet powerful, act symbolizing our support for democracy.
This nationwide action serves as a peaceful and powerful expression of our shared commitment to safeguarding democratic values. It is an opportunity to remind our leaders and fellow citizens we are watching, we are engaged, and we expect policies that strengthen and uphold the integrity of our elections and institutions.
Now more than ever, we must stand together to protect the foundations of our democracy. Let’s take this moment to reflect, advocate and shine a collective light on the importance of fair, transparent and inclusive governance.
