October Newsletter

Dear League Members and Friends,

As we welcome the crisp air of autumn, I’m reminded of the importance of staying engaged and active in our communities, particularly as we approach another critical election season. It’s an exciting time for our League, as we continue to advance our mission to empower voters and defend democracy.

“Democracy is not a state. It is an act, and each generation must do its part.”John Lewis, U.S. Congressman and Civil Rights Leader

Public education in Wisconsin will face devastating consequences if the budget proposal for K-12 education, moved forward by the Joint Committee on Finance (JFC), is enacted.

Education Action Team

The Education Action Team focuses on the League of Women Voters' belief that high-quality public education for all children is necessary to sustain our democratic way of life and the economic health of our state and the people. We believe that adequate funding is essential to provide and sustain such an education.

An April 14 vote is scheduled on concurrence with the Senate version of "bathroom bill" H.4756 which includes amendments that are harmful to trans children and adults. The Senate version allows schools to substitute a single outdoor portable restroom (“Porta Potty”) anywhere on the school campus for that single user facility in each school building. Non-concurrence in the House would send this bill to a conference committee where these very harmful provisions can be removed. Contact your House member to vote NOT to concur with the Senate version.

S.1060, the Educator Safety and Classroom Authority Act, affirms the authority of teachers to implement classroom management. It asks for teachers and administrators to administer appropriate discipline measures to ensure a conducive learning environment in the classroom and school. Call your state senator and ask that the bill be immediately heard in subcommittee due to its late introduction in the two-year legislative session.

Please contact your House Representative to non-concur with the Senate's version of the H.4756 "bathroom bill" that recommends a porta potty as an acceptable accommodation. To be relegated to a porta potty while other students, staff, and visitors have access to permanent facilities is demeaning and hurtful.
