The League of Women Voters is studying the SAVE Act, a bill before the US Senate to amend the National Voter Registration Act of 1993 by requiring proof of US citizenship to register an individual to vote in elections for Federal office, and for other purposes.
Position In Brief:
The following points were brought before the Williamson County Election Commission's meeting on May 19th. Dorinda Smith was the spokesperson for our organization,
I bring this bill to the attention of the Williamson County Election Commission because of several concerns.
1. Impact to existing voters. Any change of address will require voters to come to the Election Office in person. We are concerned that many long time voters will not have the requisite documentation specifically married women without passports who took their husband’s last name. This is only one group of people impacted under the Act.
2. The Act provides 30 days to establish a program of compliance. 30 days is not a lot of time to review and amend policies and procedures, train staff and inform the public of new requirements.
3. The Act has no funding for state enforcement.
4. The Act allows for a private right of action specifically against an election official who fails to comply with the requirements, either intentionally or unintentionally.
