The big corporations, millionaires, and billionaires will lie through their teeth to avoid paying their fair share. Even after this measure takes effect, California’s commercial property, state, and local taxes will still be among the lowest in the nation.
To win, we’ll have to make sure that our movement is more powerful than their money. For decades, Proposition 13 has been the third rail of California politics -- untouchable. But the Trump administration budget would be a disaster for California. We would lose hospitals, important biomedical research, and essential training for health care professionals. It would devastate our public schools, eliminating $250 million in teacher training funding. Fifteen school districts would lose $18 million.
California’s values say that Google and Apple shouldn’t pay the nation’s lowest property taxes while parents throughout the state struggle to fundraise for their children’s school programs and equipment!
If California wants to show that we value all Californians, then we have to end the Prop 13 property tax handout to corporations -- collecting $9 billion in revenue to help fund the programs and services that the Trump administration and his allies in Congress want to end.
