One of our most important priority bills - aimed at building a more representative democracy - is almost over the finish line! We have spent the year collaborating with partner organizations, briefing legislators, and negotiating amendments on AB 796 (Berman) to improve the voter registration process at the DMV. But we can’t do this work without you - we need you to urge your State Senator to vote YES on AB 796.
AB 796 is a critical, commonsense measure to build on the success of California’s Motor Voter program, implement best practices, and remove impediments to equitable voter registration. We have pushed the bill through the Assembly and now it’s coming up for a key vote on the Senate floor. Can we count on you to support AB 796? Take action today.
BACKGROUND
The Motor Voter program wasn’t an overnight success. It has taken years of stakeholder collaboration – and a lawsuit – to build and refine the system. And despite improvements, there are still impediments to equitable voter registration at the DMV. AB 796 would help solve that problem. Urge your State Senator to vote YES on AB 796.
We are supporting AB 796 to:
- Make permanent the DMV’s current practices that were put in place as the result of the League of Women Voters of California v. Annis court case.
- Improve oversight and transparency of the Motor Voter program.
- Ensure voter registrations are processed in a timely and fair manner.
