More about the March 5 Presidential Primary Election

The California Presidential Primary Election is on March 5, 2024. All California active registered voters will receive a ballot in the mail about a month before the election. Note this information and key dates:

• The last day to register to vote for the March 5, 2024, General Election is February 20, 2024.
• If you missed the registration deadline, you can still register and vote in the election at any voting location up to and through Election Day. If you look up and go to your assigned voting location, then your ballot will be sure to include all the contests on which you’re allowed to vote. Learn more from the Secretary of State.
• County Elections Offices will begin mailing ballots by February 5, 2024.
• Your ballot will include one state ballot measure, candidates for President, U.S. Senate, U.S. Representative in Congress, State Senator, State Assembly, as well as other local candidates and local measures. Check your California State Voter Information Guide for information on state contests. Your County guide will be mailed about a month before the election.
• You choose whether to vote in person at your voting location or return the ballot you received either by mail or by dropping it off.
• If you wish to mail back your ballot, fill it out and mail it back early so that it is postmarked no later than Election Day, March 5. You do not need a stamp to mail back your ballot in the return envelope provided.
• You may drop off your ballot at any voting location in your county, including your County Elections Office. Your county will also open secure ballot drop-off locations starting about a month before Election Day. If you drop it off it must be dropped off by 8 p.m. on Election Day, March 5.
• In-person voting locations will offer replacement ballots, accessible voting machines, and language assistance in some places. They will be open on Election Day, March 5 from 7 AM – 8 PM. Check for your location here.
