As we enter Women’s History Month, it is difficult for me to find the right thing to say. The accomplishments of women throughout history have advanced every part of society - from voting rights, to civil rights, science, government, athletics, healthcare access, business leadership, caregiving, and more. Women have been on the forefront of advancement. Still, it is difficult to celebrate at this moment, as people, including women in the Ukraine are taking up arms to defend their country, their homes, their land. And yet we must.

We must celebrate the sacrifice of every woman throughout history who has given her talent, her passion, her intellect, her curiosity, her innovation, her love, and even her life to advance society. Every woman who has been invisible in the eyes of history as she pushed forward. Every woman who has healed and brought hope to others. We must celebrate the women who are fighting to defend their countries at this moment, to protect their families - because they bear the weight of the future on their shoulders. We must celebrate their resolve, their bravery, and their commitment to democracy and the future they choose, not one imposed upon them.

I celebrate every woman in the League today, and throughout our long and storied history, who has stood for what is right and has given of herself to be a changemaker. To lift others so they can be changemakers. Whether that be through strengthening our democracy, advancing voting rights, fighting misinformation through voter education, or advancing policies to break down systemic inequities and build a more equitable future for all people - I celebrate you.

I’m proud to stand with you as we continue to empower voters and defend democracy in California. Here’s to strong, powerful women continuing to fight for self determination, and a better, more just world.

In League,
