Advocacy Update

On March 26th, we launched our Advocacy Webinar Series with a compelling session focused on California’s voter participation gap. We thank everyone who joined us for this important discussion, and for those who couldn’t attend, we invite you to watch the recording here.

This event featured a panel of distinguished experts in research and community engagement who delved into the ongoing challenges of voter participation, especially addressing the persistent participation gap among youth and voters of color as compared to the older, non-Hispanic white population in California. Our panelists proposed actionable solutions that can be implemented at both the local and state levels to address this issue.

One key solution highlighted during the webinar is AB 868 (Carrillo). With historically low primary election turnout in our state, this bill, co-sponsored by the LWVC, would ensure that county contests are included on the General Election (November) ballot and would also allow for the primary election to be skipped when only two candidates file, preventing unnecessary elections. The LWVC is co-sponsoring this important legislation alongside Common Cause California, Initiate Justice, Initiate Justice Action, and Inland Empire United.

League of Women Voters v. Trump

The League of Women Voters of California stands with our national organization and voting rights advocates against President Trump’s March 25, 2025, Executive Order, an unlawful attack on democracy. Among other anti-voter features, this Order forces the Election Assistance Commission to require “documentary proof of citizenship” for federal voter registration, threatening to disenfranchise millions.

The League and civil rights groups, including the ACLU, are suing to block this violation of the National Voter Registration Act and the U.S. Constitution. We are committed to protecting every American’s right to vote. Read our news article to hear more.
