We’ve made a big leap forward in our ongoing fight to build a fairer, more transparent California—thanks to the dedication of our team and supporters. Through our Spring Advocacy Webinar Series, we’ve engaged communities on critical issues shaping our state. And with our virtual convention coming up soon, there’s much more to come. Read on for more details!
Advocacy Update
Our efforts to repeal the ban on public financing of campaigns cleared an important milestone, passing out of the Senate with a vote of 28-10 in favor. SB 42 is a bold step to take back our democracy. It would lift California’s outdated ban on public financing of campaigns – but only if the Legislature passes it and voters approve it in 2026. SB 42 doesn’t impose public financing, it gives voters the power to choose it in their communities.
- Public financing amplifies the voices of small donors and everyday voters,
- It lowers barriers to running for office, helping build a more diverse and representative democracy.
It restores trust by reducing the stranglehold of wealthy special interests on our political system. The League has fought for decades to curb big money’s grip on politics and restore equity, transparency, and accountability.
Prior to this critical Senate vote, we joined our partners at California Common Cause and California Clean Money Campaign to hold a kickoff rally in Berkeley. Nearly 100 community members came out to voice the need for SB 42.
