While the sheltering experience has provided me with more time to think, my thoughts often leap around and land in an unresolved jumble. One lingering concern is the COVID-19 pandemic and what it means for democracy. Etymology tells us that the demic part of pandemic and demo part of democracy are rooted in the same Greek demos - meaning people of a district.
In a mere two months - from the end of February until the end of April - 52 countries and territories across the world postponed national and subnational elections. In the United States, 15 States postponed their primaries. This past Friday, Governor Newsom declared that all CA registered voters will be mailed a ballot for the November presidential election. Without question, the pandemic means change.
Our League chapter will hold its Annual Business Meeting on Tuesday, June 30 at 5:30 pm on the patio of Manzanita Place (the Elks Lodge). You will receive a meeting packet towards the end of May. The League Board will, of course, monitor all congregate health advisories and orders, and we will change the meeting format if needed. The Manzanita Place patio is large enough to maintain appropriate social distancing, and we ask you to bring your own meeting packets, water, and pens.
So, please save the date and join us~! This is an important time to be a League member and do what the League does best: empower voters and defend democracy.
Sincerely,
Linda MacMichael, President
