What Data Suggests About How Voters Would Benefit

from Proportional Representation

The presenter is Deb Otis, Director of Research for FairVote.

The program is sponsored by LWV Rogue Valley, OR, and LWV Sacramento County.

“LWVUS promotes an open governmental system that is representative, accountable, and responsive. We encourage electoral methods that provide the broadest voter representation possible and are expressive of voter choices.” – From LWVUS Position on Voter Representation & Electoral Process. See Full Position Here (pg. 47)

Notes on PR from Paula Lee, President of LWV Sacramento County:

Albany, CA, just finished their successful election using RCV to elect their city council and school board creating proportional representation for voters.

Cambridge, MA, home of Harvard and MIT, a very diverse city, has been using Proportional Ranked Choice Voting to elect their 9-member city council as well as their school board for over 60 years.  These legislative bodies reflect the voters they represent...supported by our LWVC and LWVUS position Voter Representation / Electoral Process. [See LWVUS position above.]

Portland, Oregon, and Portland, Maine, voters just adopted Proportional Ranked Choice Voting.

RCV is great for electing single winners and can also be used to elect more than one to a legislative body creating what some call the “gold standard” when it comes to representing voters …. majority rule with representation for the minority.

These are quarterly ZOOM meetings with speakers on electoral system reforms.  Deb Otis is a great speaker.  It’s informal and questions are encouraged.
