Job Description: Director of Observer Corps
As Director of the Observer Corps, you will lead a committee of League Observers and act as liaison between the observers, the board, and League members. Observers are designated League observers of a local government agency. They report to the Director on possible violations of public meeting requirements (Brown Act) and issues of interest to the League.
Chief Duties of Director, Observer Corps:
- Chair meetings of the Observer Corps at least once per year.
- Maintain a current list of eligible agencies that members can observe.
- Recruit new observers and train them about the Brown Act and their role and obligations as observers.
- Coordinate with President to send and introductory letter or email to agency introducing a new observer when an observer is assigned.
- Report any suspected violation of the Brown Act to the League President for discussion and possible League response.
- Encourage observers to communicate their experiences and findings to the League membership via newsletter articles, meeting reports, etc.
- Understand the Brown Act and keep up with any changes.
With other board members:
- Attend board meetings as scheduled whenever possible, typically once a month for 90 minutes on Zoom.
- Plan and oversee League events and activities.
- Protect the League’s nonpartisan reputation and educate members on the importance of this policy.
- Encourage members to become more active in the League and take on leadership roles.
- Help recruit new members.
- Oversee financial condition of League; approve annual budget.
- Educate yourself about League positions and organization on national, state, and local levels.
- Work to promote the League’s Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) policy.
